Microdrill includes wear-indicating TiN coating

Kennametal offers the GOdrill™, its first microdrill, which works with multiple applications and multiple materials. The drill is designed to make holes from 0.0394 to 0.5 in. dia. Features include high-end material grades, a wear-indicating TiN coating, and new proprietary geometries.

According to the manufacturer, the microdrill qualifies as a cost-effective, throw-away type tool in the given diameter range. The marginless design reduces friction and heat, while the straight cutting lip with protection chamfer allows no starting point for wear and an even distribution of cutting forces.

Built on the company’s proprietary KC7325™ grade of solid carbide, the microdrill features a multilayer TiAlN-based coating for high hot hardness. This not only enables high cutting speeds, it also provides excellent holemaking, even in minimum-quantity lubrication situations, states the manufacturer. The drill is available in solid (flood coolant) or through-coolant styles.
