Finishing process protects oil and gas drilling components from corrosion

Birchwood Technologies offers the TRU TEMP® low-temp black oxide process as an in-house metal finishing process to provide corrosion protection, break-in lubricity, and galling resistance to oil and gas drilling components.

The process, which operates at 200 degrees, forms a protective satin black magnetite finish that withstands 100 to 150 hrs. of neutral salt spray or several hundred hours of humidity. The 0.5-micron-thick finish has no effect on material hardness or load-bearing properties. Its crystalline structure allows it to hold a rust inhibitor.

The operating solutions contain no EPA-regulated chemicals. Process rinse waters typically are sent to sewer as nonhazardous discharge. Most process lines do not require waste treatment equipment.
