Tool steel suitable for long runs of UHSS

Bohler-Uddeholm has developed Vanadis 4® Extra, a powder metallurgy (P/M) tool steel suitable for applications with high demands on adhesive wear and chipping resistance, particularly for stamping or forming ultra high-strength steels.

According to the company, the new steel, which replaces Vanadis 4®, has better machinability and similar heat treatment to AISI D2 tool steel. The steel dimensional stability after hardening and tempering makes it suitable for CVD coating.

Produced by SuperClean P/M processing, the steel's heat treatability properties allow it to reach hardnesses in the mid 60s HRC.
